Application of polyether organosilicon additives in coatings

01 Used as a wetting agent for coating substrates
Due to the high surface tension of water in water-based systems, it is difficult to quickly wet substrates (especially low surface tension substrates). Therefore, the use of substrate wetting agents is particularly important in water-based coating systems. At present, the main chemical structures of wetting agents used in water-based industrial paints include polyether organosilicon, star shaped polyether, alkyne glycol ether, etc.
Polyether modified siloxane, used as a wetting agent for substrates, is used in water-based systems. Due to its special structure, the organic silicon chains in it can be fully extended, causing a large amount of - CH3 to extend outward, greatly reducing the surface tension of the system. Polyether modified siloxane wetting agents can usually reduce surface tension to below 22 N/m, with the lowest being 20-21 N/m. Such low surface tension allows water-based coatings with substrate wetting agents to wet the vast majority of low surface energy substrates, and even have good wetting properties on difficult to wet PTFE substrates.

02 Used as a leveling agent for coatings
Organic silicon leveling agents are an important category of coating leveling agents. The currently widely used organosilicon leveling agents in coatings are various modified silicone oils. Depending on the type of modification, they mainly include polyether modified silicone oil, polyester modified silicone oil, phenyl modified silicone oil, alkyl modified silicone oil, phenyl alkyl co modified silicone oil, and alkyl polyether co modified silicone oil. Among them, polyether modified silicone oil can be adjusted in a large range of structures and its performance can cover various different requirements, making it suitable for various systems.

03 Used as a defoamer for coatings
The commonly used defoamers for water-based coatings include mineral oil type, organosilicon type, and polyether type. Among them, organosilicon defoamers have the advantages of low surface tension, high surface activity, strong defoaming ability, low dosage, and good thermal and chemical stability. However, the compatibility between conventional polydimethylsiloxane and the system is limited, which can easily lead to paint film defects such as shrinkage and pinholes, especially in high gloss systems.
Polyether modified organosilicon is a polyether siloxane copolymer prepared by introducing polyether segments into siloxane molecules. Polyether modified organosilicon defoamer is a defoamer composed mainly of polyether with strong anti foaming ability and dimethyl silicone oil with strong hydrophobicity and rapid defoaming, matched with emulsifiers, stabilizers, and other components that can organically combine silicone oil with polyether. Generally speaking, the higher the degree of polyether modification, the better the compatibility, but the defoaming effect will also be weakened. Usually, it is necessary to choose the appropriate modification ratio to obtain different defoamer products based on the difficulty of defoaming the system.
Polyether modified silicone defoamers have excellent defoaming and anti foaming properties and are widely used in the water-based coating industry, especially in water-based industrial coatings, water-based wood coatings, automotive coatings and other systems.
