Hydroxy Silicone Oil Demand Rises as Textile and Personal Care Sectors Seek Eco-Friendly Solutions

Industry analysts report a steady increase in the global demand for hydroxy silicone oil, driven by its expanding role as a reactive intermediate in high-performance coatings, textile finishing, and premium personal care products.

Also known as hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), this silicone variant is distinguished by reactive hydroxyl groups at both ends of its molecular chain. Unlike non-reactive silicone oils, this chemical structure allows it to undergo polycondensation reactions, making it an essential building block for producing high-molecular-weight silicone rubbers and pressure-sensitive adhesives.

In the textile industry, the oil is gaining traction as a superior softener and smoothing agent. Manufacturers report that fabrics treated with hydroxy silicone oil emulsions exhibit a permanent "soft-touch" feel that survives multiple wash cycles, a key advantage over traditional fatty acid softeners.

Simultaneously, the personal care sector is adopting micro-emulsions of hydroxy silicone oil for use in hair conditioners and leave-on skin products. "We are seeing a clear shift toward ingredients that offer both performance and a favorable environmental profile," said a senior formulation chemist. "Hydroxy silicone oil is inherently low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and can be formulated into water-based systems without compromising stability."

Supply chain observations indicate that production capacity for hydroxy silicone oil has expanded significantly over the past 18 months, with new hydrolysis and ring-opening polymerization processes yielding higher purity grades at reduced costs. This is expected to further stimulate adoption in emerging applications, including release coatings for electronic components and hydrophobic additives for construction materials.
