Against the backdrop of global supply chain restructuring and domestic industrial upgrading, the localization of hydroxyl silicone oil production has entered an accelerated phase in 2026. From technology follower to selective technology leader, domestic manufacturers are breaking the technological monopolies long held by overseas players in high-end application segments.
In the medical device sector, hydroxyl silicone oil applications are extending beyond traditional lubrication coatings into more critical domains. High-purity, biocompatible hydroxyl silicone oil serves as a base raw material for medical-grade silicone tubing, seals, and silicone gels. Ultra-high-viscosity grades (exceeding 100,000 mPa·s), with their exceptional thixotropy and biological inertness, are used in prosthetic pads, scar management sheets, and silicone gel dressings. These applications have extremely low tolerance for residual catalysts and cyclosiloxane impurities, historically necessitating import dependency. However, as domestic producers achieve breakthroughs in post-polymerization treatment and devolatilization, the domestic supply capability for medical-grade hydroxyl silicone oil has significantly strengthened, with several products now certified to ISO 10993 biocompatibility standards.
The electronics sector represents another major frontier for domestic substitution. As China has become the world's largest producer of electronic products, and with the explosive growth of the new energy vehicle industry, demand for electronic potting compounds, thermally conductive adhesives, and conformal coatings has surged. Hydroxyl silicone oil plays a dual role in these materials as both base polymer and modifier. In demanding applications such as 5G base stations, high-power power supplies, and EV battery packs, electronic-grade hydroxyl silicone oil—with its low dielectric constant, high volume resistivity, and stable performance across a wide temperature range—has become an irreplaceable material.
Under the policy framework supporting carbon neutrality goals, hydroxyl silicone oil is also demonstrating substantial potential in renewable energy equipment protection. Wind turbine blades and photovoltaic modules are continuously exposed to sand, salt spray, and UV radiation, which rapidly degrade conventional protective materials. Hydroxyl silicone oil-modified silicone coatings, leveraging their exceptional weatherability and hydrophobicity, provide reliable protection for over a decade. With China's offshore wind capacity and utility-scale solar installations in desert regions expanding rapidly, demand in this segment is expected to sustain double-digit growth over the next five years.
The international footprint of Chinese hydroxyl silicone oil is also expanding. Export volumes reached approximately 53,000 tons in 2025, with over 80% of products passing EU REACH SVHC screening. This demonstrates that domestic products have achieved the quality and regulatory compliance necessary to compete in global markets. As infrastructure development accelerates along the Belt and Road Initiative and traditional industries migrate to Southeast Asia and South Asia, China—as the world's largest organosilicon producer—is well-positioned to serve as the primary global supply hub for hydroxyl silicone oil.
Looking ahead, the competitive landscape of the hydroxyl silicone oil industry is expected to be shaped by two distinctive patterns. In traditional application segments, cost control and scale will remain key competitive factors, with industry concentration likely to increase. In high-end application segments, technological barriers and customer qualification processes will determine competitive success, with early movers in medical-grade and electronic-grade products capturing significant premium pricing and first-mover advantages. Across both trajectories, the core principle remains constant: only those who truly understand downstream customers' process requirements and translate those insights into specific product design parameters will prevail in this increasingly competitive market.
