Photovoltaic encapsulation and AI data center cooling drive unprecedented price momentum

The high-hydrogen silicone oil market has experienced a dramatic price surge in the second quarter of 2026. Data compiled by industry pricing intelligence services shows that high-hydrogen silicone oil prices jumped nearly 22% on April 15 alone, following a period of steady increases throughout the first quarter.

Two Industries, One Super-Cycle

Industry analysts attribute this pricing momentum to converging demand from two high-growth sectors: photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing and AI data center liquid cooling.

In the photovoltaic industry, methyl hydrogen silicone oil serves as a critical cross-linking agent in PV module encapsulation. With China's PV and power battery sectors continuing to register double-digit growth rates year-to-date, the resulting demand for specialty silicone materials has directly translated into price pressure at the supply level.

Simultaneously, silicone oil-based liquid cooling technology is emerging as a disruptive force in thermal management for AI compute infrastructure, electrochemical energy storage systems, and electric vehicle fast-charging applications. The technology offers compelling advantages over traditional fluorinated fluid cooling solutions, including superior environmental profile (fluorine-free composition) and significant cost advantages—priced at just one-quarter to one-tenth that of fluorinated fluids.

Liquid Cooling Adoption Accelerates

The adoption of silicone oil as a cooling medium has gained substantial momentum, with major technology firms incorporating the technology into their data center thermal management strategies. The combination of excellent electrical insulation properties, chemical stability, and competitive pricing positions silicone oil-based cooling as a viable alternative to traditional approaches.

Market observers note that the recent price surge reflects not merely a temporary supply-demand imbalance but rather a structural shift in the application landscape for hydrogen silicone oil. Historically dominated by textile finishing and construction waterproofing applications, the material is now establishing a significant foothold in the fast-growing thermal management sector.

Looking ahead, analysts project that as AI compute capacity continues to expand and EV fast-charging infrastructure proliferates, demand for silicone oil-based cooling fluids will continue to outpace supply, potentially supporting sustained pricing strength through the remainder of 2026 and beyond.
