Breakthrough Polymerization Technology Resolves Long-Standing Silicone Oil Quality Challenges

A newly published Chinese patent discloses a novel photo-thermal协同催化 polymerization method for vinyl silicone oil, representing a significant advance in silicone synthesis technology. While the patent specifically addresses vinyl silicone oil, the underlying principles apply broadly to ethyl silicone oil and other polysiloxane products.

Traditional thermal catalytic polymerization processes—whether acid or base-catalyzed—have long faced fundamental limitations: undesirable side reactions, cyclic byproduct formation (including D4), end-group degradation, and broad molecular weight distributions that compromise batch-to-batch consistency.

The newly disclosed two-stage process offers a compelling alternative:

Stage 1 (Photo-initiation): A photoacid generator activates polymerization under light exposure at moderate temperatures, producing an initial polymer with minimal side reactions.

Stage 2 (Thermal propagation): Heat and catalyst are introduced to continue polymerization to the target molecular weight, achieving the desired viscosity and end-group functionality.

The patent abstract states that this approach "enables mild initiation and precise control of the polymerization reaction, effectively avoiding the side reactions and end-group degradation issues associated with acid/base catalysis in traditional thermal catalytic systems".

For the ethyl silicone oil industry, scalable precision synthesis technology could enable narrower molecular weight distribution, lower cyclic content, and more consistent product performance—advantages particularly valued in medical device, optical, and high-purity electronics applications.
