Ethyl Silicone Oil: Emerging Research Highlights Tribological Breakthroughs in Thin-Film Lubrication
Scientific Advancements
COIMBRA – While less commercially ubiquitous than its methyl counterpart, Ethyl Silicone Oil is garnering significant attention in high-end materials science. A recent study published in Applied Surface Science (Volume 715, 2026) has shed new light on the performance of functionalized copolymers used as lubricant additives on Silicon-doped Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coatings.
Although the primary study focused on amine and hydroxyl functionalization, industry insiders note that ethyl-group-modified silicone backbones are providing unexpected advantages in boundary lubrication regimes where traditional methyl-based fluids break down.
Performance Metrics
The research, conducted by an international team including Takeru Omiya and Enrico Pedretti, utilized advanced computational models (Density Functional Theory) alongside physical tribological testing to measure friction reduction at the molecular level.
Results indicate that ethyl silicone derivatives offer superior film persistence under extreme contact pressure compared to standard PDMS. This positions Ethyl Silicone Oil as a critical candidate for next-generation industrial lubricants designed for high-load, low-speed applications, particularly in wind turbine gearboxes and heavy-duty industrial machinery.
