Fluorosilicone Oil: Navigating the Regulatory Maze of US EPA’s PFAS Crackdown

Regulatory Compliance Alert
WASHINGTON D.C. – A significant regulatory shift is sending shockwaves through the specialty chemicals industry, particularly affecting manufacturers and exporters of Fluorosilicone Oil. As of March 2026, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has dramatically expanded the scope of PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) regulations, placing fluorinated silicone compounds under intense scrutiny.
Industry experts warn that while standard Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is PFAS-free, fluorosilicone oils—specifically those containing trifluoropropyl groups or perfluoropolyether modifications—likely fall under the EPA’s broad definition of PFAS due to the presence of perfluorinated carbon atoms (-CF₂-).

Supply Chain Disruptions
U.S. Customs has reportedly begun detaining shipments suspected of containing these substances. “Many suppliers sell ‘fluoro-silicone oil’ as standard silicone oil without labeling the fluorine content on the Certificate of Analysis,” a trade compliance specialist told our reporters. “Exporters are now facing product holds at ports like Long Beach and Houston because the formulations are triggering PFAS alarms”.

Industry Response
In response, leading manufacturers are pivoting toward non-fluorinated alternatives. Jiujiang Deepsea Technology and other major players are now promoting high-purity PDMS and polyether-modified silicones as drop-in replacements for applications previously reserved for fluorinated fluids, such as extreme waterproofing and anti-graffiti coatings.
“The question is no longer ‘Does my product contain PFAS?’ but ‘Can I prove it doesn’t?’” the report notes. Companies are now scrambling to secure third-party fluorine content testing and PFAS-free declarations from upstream suppliers to avoid costly litigation and import bans.
