What is silicone oil?
Silicone oil is a common name. You can hardly see the words "silicone oil" in the product ingredient list. Instead, there are various "siloxanes", such as polydimethylsiloxane, cyclopentasiloxane, polydimethylsiloxanol, phenyltrimethicone, and so on. Generally speaking, as long as the name contains "silane" or "siloxane", it is a silicone oil ingredient.
Silicone oil has good lubricity, stability and high temperature resistance. Therefore, silicone oil is widely used in the production of skin care products and cosmetics in the cosmetics industry.
What are the uses of silicone oil in cosmetics?
Improve skin feel: Take the most common polydimethylsiloxane as an example. It can increase the smooth and delicate feeling of the skin without any greasy or residual feeling. Especially compared with some moisturizing products such as petrolatum, silicone oil with the same moisturizing effect is more refreshing and comfortable in summer and has a good skin feel. Therefore, silicone oil is usually used more in sunscreens we know to reduce the stickiness of various sunscreens.
Moisturizing: Some smaller molecular silicone oils can penetrate the skin and form a protective film to lock in skin moisture and keep the skin moist.
Moisturize, protect and brighten hair:
For moisturizing hair, silicone oil can deposit on the hair and make the hair scales smoother. Especially for the damaged parts of the outermost hair scales of the hair. Shampoos and conditioners containing silicone oil can make the hair smoother and softer, reduce tangles and be easier to comb.
For protecting hair: After the hair scales are covered with a layer of silicone oil, it can reduce friction. Generally speaking, a large part of hair damage comes from the friction between hair strands.
For brightening hair: Silicone oil deposits on the hair and forms a protective film on the hair surface, making the hair surface more flat. Light can undergo more specular reflection, making the hair look brighter.
Will silicone oil clog pores?
Organic compounds of silicon are macromolecular substances and usually stay on the skin surface together with other moisturizing ingredients. They cannot be absorbed by the skin and will not clog pores. And currently there is no evidence to prove that silicone oil will clog pores and cause hair loss.
Is silicone-free shampoo better?
There is no superiority or inferiority between these two shampoos. You can choose different shampoos according to your hair quality.
If your hair is dry and damaged, you can use shampoo containing silicone oil to wash your hair.
If your hair is oily, you can use silicone-free shampoo to reduce the oil output of the scalp and make your hair more fluffy.
