Classification of silicone oil emulsion type defoamers

Hits: 815 img

The silicone emulsion, a form of silicone oil, finds extensive application in various fields, particularly in fabric softening finishing and as defoamers. Below is a detailed analysis of these two applications:

I. Silicone Fabric Softening Finishing Agent

Silicone emulsions play a crucial role in fabric softening finishing. They primarily achieve fabric softening through the following types:

  1. First-generation Silicone Fabric Finishing Agents:
    • Primarily composed of a mechanical mixture of dimethyl silicone oil and hydrogen-containing silicone oil (and their derivatives).
    • These finishing agents improve the softness and hand feel of fabrics.
  2. Second-generation Silicone Fabric Finishing Agents:
    • Represented by hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane emulsions.
    • Prepared through emulsion polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane monomer, water, emulsifiers, catalysts, and other raw materials under specific conditions.
    • Characterized by short processing time, high efficiency, simple equipment, and convenient operation.
    • The emulsions are stable with uniform particles, and the polymers have reactive groups (hydroxyl groups) at both ends, which can further react to form films, enhancing the application effect.

Based on the different surfactants, hydroxyl silicone oil emulsions can be classified into the following types:

  • Cationic Hydroxyl Silicone Oil Emulsions:
    • Use quaternary ammonium salt emulsifiers, with ammonium hydroxide as the catalyst.
    • Suitable for post-finishing of various textiles, improving fabric hand feel, elasticity, smoothness, and crispness.
    • Excellent waterproof performance, and when used in combination with methyl hydrogen silicone oil emulsions, the waterproof durability is high.
  • Anionic Hydroxyl Silicone Oil Emulsions:
    • Have good compatibility in fabric finishing agents and stable emulsions.
    • Avoid emulsion breaking and oil floating when used with cationic auxiliaries, making them more popular with users.
  • Amphoteric Hydroxyl Silicone Oil Emulsions:
    • Overcome the disadvantage of cationic emulsions' intolerance to hard water and can be used with various auxiliaries.
    • Exhibit good heat resistance and freeze resistance.
  • Nonionic Hydroxyl Silicone Oil Emulsions:
    • Have strong adaptability and better stability.
    • Products like UltrateX FSA, with a high molecular weight, represent advancements in this field.
  • Silicone Finishing Agents with Other Reactive Groups:
    • Introducing amino, amide, ester, and other reactive groups improves fabric oil and stain resistance, antistatic properties, and hydrophilicity.

II. Silicone Emulsion Defoamers

Silicone emulsion defoamers are widely used silicone defoamers characterized by:

  • Oil-in-Water (O/W) Emulsion:
    • Water is the continuous phase, and silicone oil is the discontinuous phase.
    • Prepared by premixing silicone oil, emulsifiers, and thickeners, gradually adding water, and then grinding in a colloid mill.
  • Easily Dispersible in Aqueous Systems:
    • Widely used as defoamers in aqueous systems.
    • Directly add the emulsion to the foaming system to achieve good defoaming effects.
  • Dilution for Use:
    • Generally not used directly at concentrations above 10%; instead, diluted to below 10% for use.
    • Avoid diluting with excessively hot or cold liquids, which can cause emulsion breaking.
  • Stability:
    • Stability decreases after dilution, and stratification (oil floating) may occur during storage.
    • Thickeners can be added to improve emulsion stability.
  • Application Methods:
    • For batch operations, can be added once or in batches.
    • For continuous operations, should be added continuously or intermittently at appropriate points in the system.
  • Types:
    • Based on dimethyl silicone oil, methylethoxy silicone oil, ethyl silicone oil, and other silicone oils.
    • Recently, silicone-polyether block copolymer (or graft copolymer) defoamers have developed rapidly, exhibiting high defoaming efficiency.

In summary, silicone emulsions play a vital role in fabric softening finishing and as defoamers. Through continuous improvement and innovation, the application fields of silicone emulsions will become more extensive, and their performance will be even more excellent.
